Der Prozess Facharbeit

Im Folgenden werde ich den Prozess, des Entstehens meiner Facharbeit beschreiben und näher darauf eingehen, wie es mir selbst dabei erging, welche Schwierigkeiten und welche Hindernisse es gab. Welche Kompromisse gemacht wurden und wie stark diese Arbeit mich selbst verändert hat.

Die Zeit des Arbeitens an der Facharbeit wird von vielen auf die 42 Tage zwischen dem Beginn des Halbjahres und dem Abgabetermin am 25. 09. begrenzt. Für einige, einschließlich mich, begann das Arbeiten jedoch wesentlich früher.

Schon mit der Themenfindung noch vor den Sommerferien begann es und hörte in ihnen auch nicht auf. Nachdem ich mein Thema gefunden hatte ging es daran, die Lektüre, auf die sich meine Arbeit beziehen sollte, mindestens bis zum Beginn des neuen Schuljahres gelesen zu haben.

Bereits in dieser Zeit musste ich viele Dinge, die ich gerne getan hätte, hinten anstellen, da diese Arbeit auch auf dem Abiturszeugnis erscheint, allerhöchste Priorität hatte.

Nach sechs Wochen voller Freude, welche, hatte ich ja meine Facharbeit im Hinterkopf, manchmal bitter schmeckte, ging es daran mit meiner Fachlehrerin genauer zu erarbeiten, auf was ich mich fokussieren sollte und wie mein Inhaltsverzeichnis möglicherweise aufgebaut werden könnte.

Im Nachhinein kann ich sagen, dass ich mich ziemlich in diesem letzten Punkt verbissen habe und so wertvolle Zeit verschwendete. Weiterhin gab es bereits hier erste Missverständnisse zwischen mir und meiner Fachlehrerin, die dazu führten, dass ich mir nicht sicher über das Ziel dieses Einstiegs war. Auch das wiederholte Beginnen mit meinem Inhaltsverzeichnis verwirrte mich in meinem Thema selbst, sodass das ich wiederum Zeit brauchte, um für mich zu sortieren, was wichtig war und was nicht.

Ich fing an, über mein Thema zu recherchieren und merkte bald, dass mir dieses half in Bezug auf die Gliederung und die Selektion der Fakten.

Das Buch, das bis dato zwar gelesen aber nicht analysiert in meinem Zimmer lag, wurde nun genauer unter die Lupe genommen. Welche Aspekte davon sind wichtig für meine Facharbeit, was kann ich eher außer Acht lassen? Wie habe ich bestimmte Abschnitte zu verstehen und was hält meine Fachlehrerin für wichtig?

Nachdem alle wichtigen Fragen geklärt waren, fing ich an zu schreiben.

In diesem Stadium der Facharbeit ging ich durch ein Wechselbad der Gefühle.

Einerseits euphorisch, da ich eine vollkommen klare Idee davon hatte, was ich als nächstes schreibe wollte, andererseits verzweifelt, weil ich vollkommen kopflos war und mir die zuerst klar erscheinende Idee unumsetzbar schien.

Zu diesem Empfinden führten vor allem die Missverständnisse zwischen mir und meiner Fachlehrerin, die meistens damit endeten, dass ich meine Idee aufgab oder teilweise ganze Seiten an bereits geschriebenem Text kürzen, abändern oder sogar vollkommen entfernen musste.

Auch war die Zeit des Arbeitens an der Facharbeit eine Zeit, in welcher ich immer wieder am Grat der Erschöpfung entlang wanderte und meine eigene Erholung hinten anstehen musste.

Im gleichen Maße wie meine Erholung, mussten auch meine Freunde und meine Freundin einstecken, da ich immer wieder tagelang vor dem Computer saß, um die Arbeit zu schaffen. Ebenso erging es meiner Familie, welche zwar immer wieder versuchte mich zu unterstützen, aber dies nur in begrenztem Maße konnte, beispielsweise durch Korrekturlesen oder hilfreiche Diskussionen zu meiner Haltung zur Arbeit.

Oftmals gebot mir meine Mutter Einhalt in Bezug auf meine Arbeitszeit.

Heute kann ich sagen, dass ich vieles durch eine bessere Zeiteinteilung hätte entspannter gestalten können.

Abschließend stellt sich für mich nun die Frage, ob diese Zeitspanne des Planens, des Recherchierens, des Schreibens, des Korrigierens und Neuschreibens etwas war, das mich für mein Leben geprägt hat.

Betrachtet man die relativ kurze Zeitspanne dieser Arbeit im Vergleich zu meiner gesamten Schulzeit, so könnte man zu dem Schluss kommen, dass ich wahrscheinlich wenig daraus mit in mein späteres Leben nehme, jedoch habe ich niemals in meiner bisherigen Lebenszeit eine Arbeit geschrieben, die einen derartigen Einfluss auf meinen Gemütszustand hatte.

My topic is”Gated communities in T.C.Boyle´s novel “The Tortilla Curtain”.

The research paper is covering the problem of illegal Mexican immigrants in the United States as well as the idea of gated communities in the USA to protect the citizens from immigrants all this with a regard to the novel.

When I started my research I thought I would find out about illegal Mexicans having no other choice than to go to America, Mexican immigrants sick of the live in America ,which is full of prejudices and aversion among them, and citizens of America which are not able to connect their lifestyle and work with these immigrants.

These thoughts came to mind because of the history of the south of America and the prejudices which are shown against other immigrant groups in America.

After reading and analysing the novel I searched for a lot of stuff on my topic in the internet. While I filtrated the rare information I gathered a quite good overview about my topic and I was able to understand the novel even better.

After all I can say that primarily in safetyzone communities any person passing by who is not a member of the community is regarded as a potential threat. A fair and objective treatment of non-members can therefore not be guaranteed. In the least gated communities can easily cause a lack of tolerance towards people who are not part of the community.

So far it is a though live being a Mexican immigrant coping with a guerilla drug war in Mexico and a lot of aversion and prejudices against you in America.

Anyway since 1970 the amount of Mexican in America got a seventeen-fold increase.

It was surprisingly for me to notice that the immigrants more likely to be part of the labour force, where they are more likely to work in lower-skillded jobs.

After all it is evidently that my hypothesis completely matches with my results but by working on my research paper I found out even more about the history of gated communities, illegal Mexican immigrants and how the citizens of America are coping with them.

A hard working real estate agent, mother of a son and a woman how knows her properties. This is Kyra. She is trying to give people a good impression of the neighbourhood and for this reason she deserted a boulevard corner which was a meeting point for many Mexican workers. Another reason for her behaviour is the grief about her two dogs which were killed by coyotes. ”They can`t hunt what they can’t see.” Is a pro from her regarding to the wall.

Jack Shirley carries on an import trade abusing Mexicans as illegal worker. Simultaneously he scurfs the hate of white man against Mexicans. He starts the discussion about the burglar on the gathering at Dominick Flood.

Dominick Flood, a client of Jack Jardine, “was entangled in some unwise investment” why he now got a device on loan from electric monitoring service for a house-arrest program. But in spite of everything he got a lot of ascendancy in the community. Initiating the cessation of the labour exchange is the best example for it. He is also one of the supporters of the idea of a gated community.

In the beginning of the novel he is called “the athlete”, later on he introduces himself as Todd Sweet, the only liberal humanist beside Delaney Mossbacher. Coming up with the idea of a column against the gated community he takes part in the story. But Delaney refuses to work with him in fear of a discussion with Kyra, which supports the gated community.

Delaney Mossbacher understands himself as a liberal humanist. He loves the nature and writes a column about it in a paper called “Wide Open Spaces”. Because he sees a deeper appreciation by himself he often digress from his actual topic up to topics like overcrowding or deforestation. The same enthusiasm he shows in environmental questions he shows in politics. At the discussion about Mexicans on the homeowner meeting he advocates for the rights of them. But bit by bit he lets other people change his opinion. At last he points on two Mexicans as the causers of a fire, when everybody was evacuated because of it. After that he calls himself a redneck, a racist and abuser.

With this extract out of Blakely and Snyder’s documentation “Fortress America: Gated Communities in the United States today” I would like to start my overview about gated societies today. More than 40.000 facilities are already build in the United States.

If you want to characterize a gated community you have to sliver them in to three different kinds.

The first ones are „lifestyle communities”. People with the same idea of lifestyle are coming here together.

The second kinds of communities are the „prestige” ones. Who lives here owns a lot of money.

The last one is the „safety zone community”.Mostly founded in the middle- and lower-class, they try to protect the people.

Many G.C`s. got a Homeowner Association. The Association regularize everything in the community. The outward experience of your house, your garage, where your car have to be, your garden, your taxes

Introduction

In common communities or city´s today everybody is acquainted to fences around his or her house or ground. A fence is a symbol for safety and protection or suggests the message to be left out. Actually fences are build with the wish to keep somebody out. Currently a wall, an oversized fence, saves the border from the USA to Mexico. An incredible amount of policemen and members of the Immigration and naturalization Service (INS) support. Creating a huge gated community. When T. Coraghessan Boyle wrote his novel “The Tortilla Curtain” he thought about this situation and reduced it onto a suburb of Los Angeles. In the following I am going to discuss certain questions which came to my mind regarding my research paper topic:”Gated communities in T.C.Boyle´s novel “The Tortilla Curtain””. I tried to start with my research paper but noticed a problem which complicated the start a lot.
